I need written assurances on RTI Act

Alandi, Pune, August 19: Noted social activist Anna Hazare, who is on an indefinite fast against moves to amend the Right to Information Act to keep file notings out of public purview, said he needed written assurances on government not going ahead with the changes in the law for him to withdraw the protest.

“I have had bad experience in the past. Verbal assurances are not enough. I need written assurances that the Amendment Bill will not be brought in Parliament in the current session or in future. Then only I will withdraw my protest. Otherwise I will go ahead with the agitation,” he said to a TV channel.

He was reacting to reports from Delhi that the government has dropped plans to bring an amendment to RTI Act in the current session of Parliament.

68-Year-old Hazare is on fast from Aug 9.
