Govt may delay RTI amendments

NDTV Correspondent

Thursday, August 17, 2006 (New Delhi):

The government isn’t keen on introducing the amendments to the Right to Information Act in the current session of Parliament.

The amendments aim to keep file notings out.

This change in position follows the Left’s refusal to accept the amendment and now the plan to refer it to a standing committee of Parliament also looks unlikely.

Hemmed in by the Left-Right opposition in Parliament and protests on the streets by information rights activists, the Congress is keen to retain goodwill generated by the creation of the act.

The cabinet cleared the amendment a week back, but Left leaders continue to oppose it despite support for exemption of file notings by Left governments in West Bengal and Kerala.

The issue is now expected to be discussed with UPA and Left allies after the monsoon session.
