RTI amendments: Hazare threatens fast unto death

Hazare threatens fast unto deathNDTV Correspondent

Monday, July 24, 2006 (New Delhi):

The Right to Information Act was considered to be one of the greatest acts of Parliament.

It helped the average citizen get things done without paying bribes.

But now the government plans to cripple the act by making fundamental changes to the Act that make it virtually useless.

Anti-corruption activist, Anna Hazare has said that he may begin a fast unto death if the cabinet’s changes, that weaken the Right to Information Act, are not withdrawn.

It is also reported that Congress President Sonia Gandhi was not informed of the weakening of the Act and it’s not clear whether she is in favour of the crippling amendments to the act.
