Rs 20K cr for babus: Pay panel gets nod

New Delhi: The Sixth Pay Commission to revise wages of 3.3 million Central government employees was on Thursday cleared by the Cabinet – a decision that is expected to put a burden of at least Rs 20,000 crore on the exchequer annually. In a move that could restrict the Right to Information, the Cabinet also approved the introduction of a Bill
in Parliament to amend the present law to exclude from public notings on files by officials in “a few areas”.

Announcing the Cabinet decision, parliamentary affairs minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi told reporters that the threemember Sixth Pay Commission has been given 18 months to submit its recommendations.

The RTI decision has been taken following objections raised by some government organisations like the UPSC that file notings should not be made public, Dasmunsi said. The much-talked-about office of profit Bill, returned by President Kalam, was not taken up at the meeting. – PTI
