NT Bureau
Chennai, July 16:

Tamilnadu Chief Information Commissioner S Ramakrishnan has said that the President of India has given assent to the Tamil translation of Right to Information Act (RTI).

The Centre had accepted it and expected to notify it soon, he told reporters after a media workshop on RTI here friday.

The State Information Commission had so far received over 1000 appeals 900 of which had been cleared. It had issued show-cause notice to 50 officials for not providing information on time, not providing information at all and for providing incomplete information, Ramakrishnan said.

The commission would have its own website soon, he said and added that the site had been designed by National Informatics Centre. To a query, he said the Tamilnadu government had been extending full cooperation to the commission. ‘Yesterday we met Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and he heard our grievances, ‘ he said. The commission had sought allocation of Rs 2.5 crore in the current budget.

Earlier in the workshop, Information Commissioner of Central Information Commission Padma Balasubramaniam said about 80 per cent of appeals were filed by the government officials themselves with queries related to promotion, disciplinary proceedings and others.

She said the commission was planning to organise a three-day meeting of State Information Commissioners in October. Various aspects of the Right to Information Act would be discussed.
