Mumbai: The civic corporation, which is already under the glare of the Bombay High Court over the money spent on road repairs, can expect more brickbats from citizens. On Thursday, as part of a special drive, more than 15 citizens filled up applications under the Right to Information (RTI) Act to gather data on waterlogging in various areas of the city and identify the officials responsible. Activist Shailesh Gandhi said, “The forms will be filed before the respective assistant municipal commissioners (ward officers) in the next few days.”

In their applications, the citizens have demanded that the ward officer, in whose area waterlogging has been pronounced, should go on record and mention the names of the officials who should be held responsible.

Besides, they have also sought to know the nature of the departmental action taken in the past against such officials. Civic activist Sandeep Jalan, who was present at the RTI camp organised for the purpose, said they will wait for the BMC to furnish its reply, following which they will decide on the future course of action.

At the same camp, applications were also filed seeking information on trenches along roads which are left open and result in flooding and mishaps. Some of the areas mentioned in the applications include Marol, spots near Hotel Leela, Chakala, and Santa Cruz (west). “We want more citizens to come forward and file RTI applications on civic issues,” Gandhi said, adding that a group of volunteers had even visited Dharavi on Thursday to start a door-to-door campaign to create awareness on RTI and hand out forms to slum-dwellers. “We got a good response, 10 RTI forms were filled up,” Gandhi said.

The RTI camp, whose main focus is to fight corruption, has seen nearly 300 forms being filled up in the first six days of the campaign.
