|Awareness campaign on Right to Information Act launched|
Mumbai, July 01: The Maharashtra Right to Information Commission today launched a fortnight-long campaign to create awareness of the provisions of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, especially in the rural areas in the state.
Appeals from urban areas are much more than those from rural pockets and the commission is striving to increase awareness about the act during a fortnight campaign, Maharashtra Right to Information Commissioner Suresh Joshi said.
Awareness regarding the act among the masses has to increase and their conscious participation should be sought to curb corruption at various levels, he said.
The largest number of applications (or appeals) are against Municipal Corporations and Councils followed by Education Department, Police and Revenue Department, he said.
Joshi said he has asked the local self government bodies in the rural areas to discuss RTI in gram sabhas also.
